Build real digital services without writing code

The “No-Code” revolution

My MBAs are always astounded by the useful (and free) “No Code” applications that you can get online. The “No-Code” revolution means that you do not need to be a techy to use data in your business.

You can build real digital services out of these 'lego' blocks.

In the past you had to build websites by coding HTML. Now you can click on templates from Wix and other firms to make professional-quality sites in record time.

But No Code is much more than making websites.

Lots of different start-ups have built web apps to carry out different business functions. Think about this: most of what firms do can be done by software. Either the software does the work, like calculations in a spreadsheet. Or the software organises the people that do the work. Like an online diary which organises your day, or project management software for building a tower block.

The key is that when you change this software, then you change the firm’s business process.

Business processes are like recipes for a meal, or musical instructions for playing a song. If someone writes a general set of instructions the user can customize them to their taste, or what they need right now.

And that is what the No-Code revolution has done for many common business processes: it has cleverly automated lots of tasks that can be customised to what you need. They can even be used to help people work together (like Slack), or easily joined to other No-Code apps (like Zapier). There are hundreds of these No-Code apps out there on the cloud.

There are new web apps being built for your browser and your phone every day: for invoicing, for analysing customer funnels, for inventory management, for projects, for organising events, … for almost any aspect of business.

Here’s a great article about the “No-Code” revolution, with lots of useful examples.
